The magazine has published 214 writers so far. There is no roster and no invitation list: what gets in is what is good, and the way in is this form.
What the editors look for
- Argument, not summary
- A piece that takes a position and defends it. We can find summaries anywhere.
- Something you actually know
- Reported, lived, or studied. The catalogue is full of writers who were in the room.
- Urdu or English, either way
- Urdu is not a second-class submission here. Half of what we publish is in it.
- Between 800 and 2,500 words
- Longer is possible if the piece earns it. Shorter usually means it is a note, not an article.
What comes straight back
- Pieces published elsewhere first.
- Anything written by a machine and passed off as yours.
- Political abuse, or writing that treats a group of people as a problem to be solved.
You keep the copyright in what you write. If a piece is accepted, an editor will come back to you about the edit before anything is published.
